Small Animal Services

Introducing our Junior and Senior Health Panels!

How can you help your pet live a longer, healthier life? Simply by regular visits to our veterinarians. Pets age much faster than we do, so health problems can develop rapidly, especially in older animals. Through regular visits, we can quickly catch small problems before they become major medical conditions.
What is a Senior Health Panel?
As dogs and cats move into the senior phase (seven years or older) of life they experience changes that are very similar to aging humans. Diseases and conditions commonly know to affect older people also affect our feline and canine companions: kidney, heart and liver disease, tumors, cancer, diabetes, depression, arthritis, thyroid conditions, hormonal problems, neuroses and loss of sensory perception. Understanding these changes and how you can provide for your pet’s needs are essential to quality of life.
Our veterinarians start by reviewing your pet’s medical history and performing a thorough physical examination. Next several non-invasive tests and procedures are performed to fully understand your pet’s health. Procedures include:
  • Complete Blood Count (CBC)—tests for anemia, infection, inflammation and overall healthiness of blood cells.
  • Chemistry Panels—tests organ systems of the body to make sure they are working normally (Liver, Kidney, Pancreas, Muscle and Bone)
  • Thyroid Function Tests—tests for functions of the thyroid gland
  • Urinalysis—assess the health and function of the urinary system, important for early detection of kidney disease
  • Fecal Exam—sample of stool is examined for intestinal parasites
  • Heartworm Test (dogs only)—tests for presence of heartworm parasite.

For optimal quality care, your senior pet will need to be re-examined by your veterinarian every six months, which is similar to a time span of two years for people.

Why does my pet need a Senior Health Panel?
Statistics show our pets are living longer. Age is never just a number but rather a measure of the effect of aging to the body. Variables such as genetics, nutrition and environment all contribute to how your pet will be influenced by the aging process. Since cats and dogs age more rapidly than people dramatic changes in health can occur in as little as three to six months.
Our Senior Health Panel can provide hidden answers. Studies have shown as many as 23% of senior dogs and 17% senior cats that appear healthy upon physical examination have an underlying disease. Once symptoms appear, the conditions may be too difficult or costly to diagnose or treat. The Senior Wellness Program includes advanced tests, so diseases and conditions are detected ear when treatment and prevention are most effective.
Most importantly, by giving your pet the Senior Health Panel, you are helping give your faithful friend a longer and healthier life.
Junior Health Panel (For Dogs & Cats 1-6 years old)
Your pet deserves the best health care possible. Our veterinarians are the first step in starting your cat or dog’s life off to the best start!
Our pets can’t tell us how they are feeling, only diagnostic testing can. Our Junior Health Panel can provide you a clear picture of your animal’s health. It can help identify problems early on so your pet can be diagnosed and properly treated; or if all tests are normal, you are assured the peace of mind your pet’s well-being is healthy! When you bring your dog in for a Health Panel, a heartworm test is provided free of charge.
Our Junior Health Panel includes:
  • Complete Blood Count (CBC)—provides detailed information about blood cells, platelets and bone marrow function. Many diseases can be identified when there are abnormalities in a CBC
  • Chemistry Panel—surveys many of the organ systems of the body to make sure they are working normally. Tests include: Liver, Kidney, Pancreas, Muscle and Bone
